"Capcom, leave it to me! Also, let me handle Viewtiful Joe too!"
Many players remember Hideki Kamiya as the director of the beloved Devil May Cry franchise. With the original game released in 2001, fans have long hoped for a remake. Recently, the director addressed this in a video uploaded to his YouTube channel.
Starting around the 4-minute 35-second mark, Hideki Kamiya shared an interesting tidbit behind the title: it was released when he was very depressed after being dumped by a girl he was dating, so it was tied up with bad memories from that period. But speaking of a remake for the game, although he didn't replay games that he created after release, and DMC is no exception, he would like to do a remake.
"Once in a while, I catch gameplay clips and think, yeah, this really does feel like a 24-year-old game design. With today’s technology and game design approach, of course, I'd want to remake it from the ground up."
Even though he is willing to work on it, that doesn't mean it will happen anytime soon. If, in the future, it could somehow be realized, Kamiya would love to take the task.
"If that ever happens… Well, I don't think seriously unless it’s really happening, so right now, I don't have anything in mind. But if the time comes — I'll come up with something. That's what I do! So Capcom, leave it to me! Also, let me handle Viewtiful Joe too!" He said.
Interestingly, while browsing the Internet for his comments, I found that this is not the first time he has publicly talked about the intention. Back in 2017, he expressed the same thoughts in an interview, saying that "I want to work on a Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe remake, or a true sequel for Okami." (via Siliconera)
Now that a sequel to Okami is being developed by no other but Kamiya's new Clovers Studio, which he founded last December alongside Kento Koyama, as an opportunity to realize his creative vision, it seems a DMC remake isn't completely ruled out.
