Hideo Kojima Believes "Almost No One Understood" His Games at First

The game designer shared that many of his projects that tried to reinvent well-established genres received general recognition only a few years after they were released.

Renowned game designer Hideo Kojima has recently shared that he believes that many of his works are basically experiments that receive universal recognition only a few years after their release. Kojima shared his thoughts on the projects he was working on at the end of December on Twitter.

According to the game designer, many did not understand him when he tried to reinvent the usual and well-established genres in the industry. For instance, he said that the concept of Metal Gear, a techno-thriller stealth game with an emphasis on a silent playthrough, was at first considered strange.

He noted that the same happened with Snatcher, 1988's cyberpunk graphic title that introduced action into adventure, and Boktai, a Game Boy Advance RPG series that used cartridges with built-in solar sensors required for gameplay.

According to Kojima, Death Stranding, a game where a courier is tasked with delivering supplies to isolated colonies and reconnecting them via a wireless communications network, is also an example of the title that was generally recognized only a few years after its release.

In early December, Kojima and Kojima Productions finally revealed that they're working on the sequel to Death Stranding. And, apparently, again we are to see some sort of an experiment there. As the game designer noted in his Brain Structure podcast, the game will not be "just a regular sequel" and although it will feel nostalgic for fans of the original game, it will also introduce something we haven't seen there before.
