Hidetaka Miyazaki Says "Part of Him Wants to Make a Traditional" JRPG

And he narrowed down the possible franchises that could see a JRPG title.

As Elden Ring, FromSoftware's first open-world RPG, releases its large-scale DLC today, attracting over half a million players. This isn't that surprising in my opinion, given players have such high anticipation from the renowned studio.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, discussed the studio's future, revealing that he has an interest in creating a traditional Japanese role-playing game someday.

Armored Core 4

Miyazaki shared some thoughts regarding this possible JRPG. It would be from a game that he had directed, and he had given a reason for this. "I think a lot of these games are so intertwined with the directors who almost invented that style of game," said Miyazaki, using the 1994 game King’s Field, which was produced by FromSoftware’s first president, Naotoshi Zin, as an example.

Furthermore, Miyazaki stated, “I don’t think there’s a scenario where I myself would make a King’s Field. The same can be said about Otogi and Enchanted Arms." King’s Field was FromSoftware's debut title, an action RPG that launched in 1994, while Enchanted Arms was an RPG created by Masato Miyazaki (formerly of FromSoftware and currently with Capcom), released in 2006.

Armored Core: For Answer

After discussing the unlikely possibilities, Miyazaki finally mentioned a franchise that could be a reality — Armored Core. During his early days at FromSoftware, he worked on Armored Core: Last Raven, which is notable for being the debut project of this future FromSoftware president. His experience with Armored Core seems to have left a significant impact on him, as evidenced by his own words:

“I worked on Armored Core 4 and Armored Core: For Answer. It enabled me to put my own interpretation on Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon and develop that.”
