id Software's 1993 Doom Ran in Windows' Notepad

The Notepad-powered version of the classic shooter runs at 60 FPS and has been developed by Sam Chiet.

"Can it run Doom?" For the vast majority of people, this phrase is just a meme, but for some, this is a challenge, a task to come up with the most outlandish and bizarre idea imaginable and somehow get id Software's classic 1993 first-person shooter running on an assortment of gadgets and programs that were not specifically designed for that purpose. Over the past few years, we have already seen countless examples of developers using old phones, smart fridges, pregnancy tests, and LEGO bricks to run Doom on, with one programmer even managing to install Doom in DOS Doom 2, so you could play Doom while playing Doom.

Game Developer Sam Chiet, a.k.a. Samperson, recently took this challenge to a whole new level by getting Doom running on Windows' Notepad at 60 FPS using an unmodified version of the application. According to Sam, the game is fully playable with "zero fakery," and a short demo he released to showcase the project was not sped up in any way.

Unfortunately, not much is known about the technology behind Notepad Doom. However, the game likely runs on some other software with Notepad acting as a display. One way or another, the project looks extremely impressive and, as Sam commented, will be released in the near future.
