In The Valley Of Gods Would Have Featured Great Water

A six-second glimpse of a game we may never get to play from the Firewatch's creators is all we get.

If the name In the Valley of Gods doesn't ring a bell, it's no surprise: Campo Santo's follow-up to the beloved Firewatch was first revealed at The Game Awards in 2017, with a release window set for 2019. Shortly after that, Campo Santo was acquired by Valve, and its team was integrated into projects like Half-Life: Alyx, shifting the resources and putting In the Valley of Gods on indefinite hold, leaving its fate uncertain.

Originally shared on Bluesky, Matthew Wilde, the Valve developer responsible for the water shader in Counter-Strike 2, posted a water test he created while at Campo Santo before its move to Valve. This six-second clip offers a first-person view of the archaeologist protagonist from the game's trailer as she and the player navigate a water-filled cave toward an exit. Given that this footage is likely over five years old, it's an impressive glimpse of water technology that could have been.

The game's Steam page now lists a 2029 launch date. Do you think we'll ever see In the Valley of Gods release?
