Instagram Introduces Changes to Its Design for the First Time in Years

The app's signature cursive logo has been refreshed for the first time in 10 years, sparking mixed reactions from users online.

Instagram has changed its logo, which hasn't been updated in 10 years. The change is a part of a larger brand identity shift that includes refreshed typography, motion, and layout. The new logo is already live, while the full brand identity rollout continues through 2026 and beyond.

The current changes apply specifically to the wordmark at the top of the app; the icon in the menu remains unchanged. The new wordmark keeps the brand's signature cursive style, but with a twist: some letters are connected, while others are not. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, described it as "cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and craft that's always made it Instagram."

"The refreshed Instagram wordmark modernizes our signature script while preserving the warmth and individuality at the heart of the brand," the announcement reads.

Reception has been mixed. While some users are neutral or positive about the change, others have criticized it online, with some pointing out that the new wordmark can be misread as "Instagzam" and questioning the logic behind which letters are connected. Others simply preferred the old wordmark, saying it felt more nostalgic.

The Next Web noted an interesting parallel: when Instagram redesigned its icon in 2016, replacing the brown camera with a yellow-pink-orange gradient, the shift coincided with the app's evolution from a photo-sharing platform into a broader video and social content app. Whether this new change signals a similar shift in direction remains to be seen.
