Intel and Microsoft have struck a deal worth over $15 billion for Intel to manufacture custom chips designed by Microsoft. The partnership was revealed by Intel at its Foundry event.
"We are in the midst of a very exciting platform shift that will fundamentally transform productivity for every individual organization and the entire industry," stated Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (via The Verge).
While the use of these chips remains undisclosed, Bloomberg highlighted Microsoft's internal plans for designing both processors and AI accelerators.
Speaking of the chips, they will be built on Intel's 18A process. As The Verge noted, these chips mark a significant milestone in the company's roadmap since the return of CEO Pat Gelsinger. Intel is banking on its chip foundry services to reclaim its leading position in the industry, with Microsoft being the flagship customer for this endeavor.
