Japanese Student Wins an Academy Award With a Brilliant 3D Animation

Kei Kanamori's Origami animation now has a chance to win an Oscar in the Best Animated Short Film category.

Kei Kanamori, a brilliant 3D Animator and CG Video Artist, has recently made history by becoming the first Japanese winner of a Student Academy Award with his breathtaking Origami animation, depicting traditional pieces of paper folding into flowers and animals.

Created as a graduation project at Tokyo's Digital Hollywood University, Kanamori's masterpiece is based on the skills and techniques used in real-life origami art, "exploring the infinite possibilities of origami to bring life and wonder to the simplest material." The judges from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded the artist with the silver prize, giving him an actual chance to win an Oscar in the Best Animated Short Film category next March.

"At the 51st Student Academy Awards ceremony held in London last night, my graduation project 'Origami' won the silver award in the animation category," commented the creator. "This is the first time in history that an award has been given to a project from Japan in this international competition hosted by the Oscar Academy in the United States! It is of great pleasure that a work themed on Japanese culture has been highly evaluated on the stage of Academy Awards."

While not much is currently known about the working process behind Kanamori's award-winning creation, taking into consideration the author's previous projects, it's fair to assume that a combination of Maya and Houdini was utilized to bring Origami to life.
