John Carpenter Reveals His Favorite Old and New Video Games

Halloween director revealed what his current favorite video games are and shared what game he would like to adapt into a movie.

Film industry legend John Carpenter, best known as Halloween and Escape from New York director who also worked on the upcoming Halloween Ends as a co-composer, recently revealed some of his current favorite video games.

In an interview with AV Club, Carpenter once again shared that he is a massive video games fan – he's been talking about his love for video games for years, and now, he once more discussed the topic sharing what his favorite old and new video games are, what games he is currently playing, and which of them he would like to turn into a movie if he had such a chance.

Carpenter said that he started playing games in the 90s, starting with Sonic The Hedgehog. As he notes, at first, it was really hard for him to figure out how to play the game but, eventually, he became a huge fan of the medium.

"I started in 1992, Sonic The Hedgehog. Trying to figure out how the fuck to play that game. Oh, god. It was tough for me. I mean, nobody else, I’m sure," Carpenter said.

The 74-year-old filmmaker also shared that he loves to revisit old games saying that Jak And Daxter is one of his favorite ones, especially the first part.

Speaking of the games that he's been playing lately, Carpenter shared that he recently "got hooked" on Fallout 76. He noted that he spent a lot of time playing the game and loved doing this even despite all the bugs the game had at launch. In addition, he expressed his love for Borderlands and Horizon Forbidden West, praising the latter title for its "mind-blowing" design.

Carpenter also spoke about his love for large open-world games saying that he enjoys these games' "freedom to roam around and do it your way."

"There is a template to follow, there are missions, but you can do it differently. And they keep coming up with new missions every once in a while, and new ideas. It’s good. It’s really interesting," he said.

He also added that he still has time for "Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet And Clank, and stuff like that, too."

When asked if he has a desire to make a video game adaptation, Carpenter said that there is only one game that he can think of – Dead Space. According to Carpenter, this game "would make a real great movie" and he "could do that."
