John Romero Ships New Sequel SIGIL 2 to Iconic DOOM

Yesterday, the game celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Back in 1993, id Software introduced the shareware version of their groundbreaking FPS game. This release had a big impact on the gaming industry and left a lasting legacy by popularizing an entire genre of games.

On December 10, 2023,  this legendary FPS DOOM celebrated its 30th anniversary. To mark the milestone, John Romero, the Co-creator of the original game during his time at id Software, shared a new nine-level episode called SIGIL 2. This latest release serves as a sequel to SIGIL, another DOOM episode that Romero created and released in 2019.

"Happy 30th birthday, DOOM. I'm grateful to have been a part of this incredible team. Thank you for playing our games, and thank you for keeping DOOM alive, all these many years," wrote Romero on Twitter.

SIGIL 2, the latest addition to DOOM, features a collection of nine new levels, with all but one including deathmatch arenas for multiplayer battles. Alongside fresh artwork, SIGIL 2 also boasts a new MIDI soundtrack composed by James Paddock. For those who already own DOOM, the 2MB SIGIL 2 DOOM episode is currently available for free download on Romero's website.

Also, to celebrate the big date Romero hosted a live Twitch event where he was joined by John Carmack, the other Co-creator of DOOM, to engage in a discussion about the inception of the original game. David Craddock served as a moderator of their chat. You can check the steam below.
