Josef Fares Shares a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Split Fiction

Here's how one of 2025's most acclaimed games looked during the prototyping stage.

Josef Fares, the Director of Hazelight Studios and the creative mind behind such hits as A Way Out and It Takes Two, has once again taken to Twitter to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the studio's latest game and one of 2025's most beloved and successful titles, Split Fiction.

This time, the developer has shared a neat before/after demo showcasing a couple of Split Fiction's levels during the prototyping stage and comparing the barebones-but-playable sequences to the game's final appearance. Additionally, Josef has demonstrated how the giant you encounter during the Mountain Hike side quest looked in 2022 – back when the character looked like a bunch of oversized meshes stacked on top of one another and complete with a nose ring for some reason.

And here's a similar final vs. early footage demo Josef shared back in March:

And if you'd like to have a more in-depth look at Split Fiction and its development, we highly encourage you to check out our recent interview with Hazelight's Felix Strandberg and Jacob Larsson, who joined 80 Level to discuss technical pipelines, the challenges of working with split-screens, managing animation across varying gameplay, character production and design, and more.
