Kojima Adapted Characters in Death Stranding 2 to Actors' Real Traits

Why does Fragile smoke in Death Stranding 2? Because Léa Seydoux does in real life.

During the global tour promoting Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Hideo Kojima shared that he often adapts characters’ portrayals to reflect the actors' everyday habits and unique traits. The master observes the performers in real life and then adjusts the script to better highlight their charisma.

One example is the character Fragile (via Genki on Twitter), played by Léa Seydoux. In the first game, Fragile did not smoke, but after Kojima saw Seydoux smoking in a film, he decided to incorporate that trait into her character in the game, remarking that it looked very stylish.

Kojima noted that the actress had quit smoking before filming Death Stranding 2, but when they went to a restaurant together, he saw her smoking outside. He speculated that mimicking smoking during scenes may have reignited the habit.

Another example of character adaptation is Higgs' guitar-playing in Death Stranding 2. Kojima explained that he added the electric guitar to the character’s skillset after watching Troy Baker’s YouTube channel during the pandemic and learning about his passion for the instrument.

Death Stranding 2 was released on June 26 for the PS5, receiving great reviews and worldwide love from fans. Previously, we shared how the soundtrack in Death Stranding 2 dynamically changes based on the player's actions in the game.
