Michael Gerard has launched a new in-depth course that also covers SpeedTree, Gaea, and Quixel Mixer workflows.
Michael Gerard, whose stunning environments we've featured on 80 Level multiple times, has updated his course on building a realistic birch forest environment, similar to the one on the Abandoned Train environment.
The Forest Environment course offers over 30 hours of content, covering everything from the creation of two tree sets and several ground cover models using SpeedTree 10 to the final composition with next-gen tools available in Unreal Engine 5.6. You'll learn how to make textures with Quixel Mixer, dress the terrain background of your scene using Gaea (optional), and build all the necessary shaders to achieve maximum quality. The course concludes with producing 4K renders using the Movie Render Queue.
The newly released v0.7 adds two chapters, bringing the total course content to:
- Aspen Trees (Complete creation, Speedtree 10);
- Bark & Foliage Advanced Shader (UE5.6);
- Ground Foliage (Complete creation, Speedtree 10);
- Procedural Landscape Shader & Quixel Mixer Textures (UE5.6 & Quixel Mixer);
- Advanced Tessellated Path (Quixel Mixer & UE5.6);
- PCG Trees (UE5.6);
- Main Scene Layout (UE5);
- Custom Water Shader (UE5 & Quixel Mixer).
The Forest Environment course is still in progress, with new chapters being added free of charge as the course continues to be updated. According to Michael, it's suitable for anyone who wants to learn or refine their skills in environment art. All you need is a basic understanding of Unreal Engine, and ideally, some familiarity with SpeedTree.
