The game will likely be powered by Unreal Engine 5.
According to Kotaku's new report, a new Mafia game is being developed by Hangar 13, a video game developer responsible for Mafia 3. The game will likely be a prequel to the Mafia story and has the codename Nero. According to the article, the development of the game is at a very early stage and, if Kotaku's report is to be believed, Mafia 4 will not be released any time soon.
Kotaku’s report also states that Hangar 13’s studio head Haden Blackman is leaving the studio and its parent company 2K, according to the company's internal announcement. According to the article, Haden is leaving the studio to "pursue his passion at a new endeavor." He will be replaced by Nick Baynes, the head of Hangar 13’s Brighton studio.
What's more, the upcoming Mafia prequel is reportedly being developed using Epic Games' recently released Unreal Engine 5 instead of the Mafia 3 engine that was used for the Mafia Trilogy remasters back in 2020.
