Magnifying Lens with Ray-Traced Refractions for Substance 3D

The piece is made by Ronan Mahon for "Library of Interiors".

Talented artist Ronan Mahon has shown a magnifying lens with ray-traced refractions created for Substance 3D using Unreal Engine. The detail is part of Library of Interiors – the artist's latest piece featuring Adobe's 3D asset library.

Mahon used ray-traced refraction, with translucent shadows off within the transparency to reduce noise. Magnification was controlled by adjusting the model shape/curve. The mesh was shaped like a magnifying lens with a flat side toward the camera to prevent a fish-eye look.

To anyone willing to do something similar, the creator advises increasing the refraction rays if the glass appears black.

"I think I may have enabled "output velocity" in the glass material settings to help the translucent sort properly with depth of field from the cinematic camera. Lens was attached to the camera (because it's tiny and easy to lose!) and then had its own little animated transforms done in sequencer tracks."

You can learn more about the lens on Reddit and see the full project on ArtStation. Also, don't forget to join our Reddit page and our Telegram channel, follow us on Instagram and Twitter, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
