Mark Zuckerberg Has Responded to Metaverse Memes with a Redesign

According to Meta's head, Horizon Worlds will look better than what was shown off earlier.

Last week, Meta's social virtual reality app Horizon Worlds debuted in France and Spain. To promote the launch of the app in the countries, Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has posted a screenshot of his digital avatar standing in front of the Eifel Tower and something that is vaguely reminiscent of la Sagrada Família.

"We're launching Horizon Worlds in France and Spain today!" Zuckerberg wrote. "Looking forward to seeing people explore and build immersive worlds, and to bringing this to more countries soon."

The public immediately reacted to Zuckerberg's post as the crude graphic fidelity of both the avatar and the world shown in the screenshot are not exactly what you'd expect from the company whose XR investments surpass $10 billion.

The internet exploded with mockery and memes related to the post – some users compared the graphics shown in the screenshot to the 2002 Nintendo GameCube release or the Teletubbies game for the PlayStation One, others used less kind words to describe it saying that it was an "eye-gougingly ugly VR selfie".

Mark Zuckerberg has apparently seen the memes as on Friday, he announced that "major updates" are coming to Horizon Worlds soon including improved graphics of virtual avatars. Meta's head also admitted that the screenshot he posted earlier was "pretty basic" and attached a more advanced-looking version of his avatar.

"I know the photo I posted earlier this week was pretty basic – it was taken very quickly to celebrate a launch," Zuckerberg wrote. "The graphics in Horizon are capable of much more – even on headsets – and Horizon is improving very quickly."

Meta's head said that the company will share more details on Horizon World's updates in the near future – during the upcoming Connect, the company’s annual AR/VR conference which took place in October last year. The date of this year's conference hasn't been announced yet.
