Marvel Studios Lays Off Staff Across Departments, Visual Development Team Among the Most Affected
The workforce reductions will reportedly affect 8% of the staff.
Marvel has undergone a round of layoffs driven by workforce reductions in Disney, its parent company. The cuts, as reported by Deadline, affect the offices of Marvel Entertainment in New York and Marvel Studios in Burbank, impacting 8% of the staff overall.
Layoffs have affected employees across multiple departments, including film and TV production, franchise, comics, legal, finance, and visual development. According to Forbes, the cuts impacted almost the entire Academy Award-winning visual development team at Marvel Studios. The artists, character designers, illustrators, environment designers, and other specialists have worked on multiple Marvel projects, from The Avengers to Guardians of the Galaxy to Daredevil, with many having been at Marvel for a decade or more. Marvel Studios has kept a small team to manage the hiring of freelance artists on a per-project basis.
According to sources, the layoffs are linked to Marvel Studios' previously announced reduction in its production slate, as well as Disney's broader cost-cutting and workforce reduction efforts.
