Massive Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Mod Got Approval from Ubisoft

The developers can freely add co-op, ray tracing, and whatever else they want to do with this 2006 game.

I have always admired people who can master game files and modify whatever comes to their minds, be it pretty outfits for characters, new weapons, or an overhaul of everything that exists in the game. It's especially fantastic when it comes to old titles, like Arkane's 2006 Dark Messiah of Might & Magic.

Those who still play it to this day will be happy to hear that a huge mod for it has been officially approved by Ubisoft recently. On ModDB, it's called Dark Messiah: Co-op, but over the years, it has become so much more than just a tool for multiplayer.

Now, the developers from wiltOS Technologies have much more ambitious plans. They've added ray tracing to the game and are working on an SDK so that other modders can improve Dark Messiah.

In a new blog post, they say that Ubisoft gave them a "completely blank check" to do whatever they wanted with the game because it doesn't want to "impose any sort of restrictions so that the community can really appreciate the full value of the work that's being put in here." Very sweet, it would be nice if some other companies adopted the same approach.

So wiltOS Technologies is free to be creative and now has a plan:

  1. Focus on one area of the SDK that people are most interested in
  2. Isolated that one area as much as possible from the rest of the SDK components
  3. Simplify it so minimal programming experience is needed
  4. Release the new isolated module and get feedback from modders
  5. Incorporate feedback, repeat with changes, until finally moving to next part of the SDK

Meanwhile, the team managed to tweak ray tracing with NVIDIA's RTX Remix, and it looks great. Take a look:

You can even download it and work your own magic.

This is a fantastic day for gamers and content creators that will hopefully push modding farther.
