Mesmerizing 3D Simulation of Painting a Wooden Block With a Brush

Bas Mettes astounded the community with his 12th Houdini test.

3D Generalist and Houdini Artist Bas Mettes continues experimenting with SideFX's flagship procedural 3D software, wowing the digital art community with what might be one of the most satisfying simulations you've ever seen.

Numbered 12th in Bas' ongoing series of R&D tests, this project takes digital hand-painting to a whole new level, portraying the process of painting a wooden block yellow with a brush in a way so smooth and mesmerizing, one could watch and rewatch the final animation for minutes on end. To achieve the stunning final result, the artist utilized Houdini's Vellum simulation framework along with a dynamic Displacement/Diffuse Map generated by the brush bristles.
