Meta's Quest 2 Has Reportedly Sold Nearly 15 Million Units

The analytics firm IDC claims that Quest 2 sales have reached almost 15 million units. The firm calls the device "the most successful VR headset to date."

According to International Data Corporation’s latest figures, Meta's Quest 2 has sold 14.8 million units since its launch in October 2020. IDC Associate VP of Devices EMEA Francisco Jeronimo reported the news on Twitter saying that with almost 15 million units sold Quest 2 became "the most successful VR headset to date."

The analyst also claimed that sales of VR devices grew by 97% compared to the previous year, and in the first quarter of 2022 alone they jumped by as much as 242%.

Although Meta never directly disclosed the sales figures, there have been clues to Quest 2’s success in the past. For instance, in November last year, the CEO of Qualcomm, the company that produces the Snapdragon XR2 chips that power Quest 2, stated that the headset had shipped 10 million units. However, later Qualcomm's spokesperson walked back the statement saying that it was "an average of third-party market size estimates."

If the figure provided by Qualcomm's CEO is really to be believed, and Quest 2 indeed sold 10 million units by November 2021, after 13 months that it has been on the market, then the headset might really achieve nearly 15 million units sold after the 20 months.

Previously, during Facebook’s Q4 2020 earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg stated that sales above 10 million were necessary for a sustainable ecosystem and this number of VR users would make the platform financially viable.
