Meta Shows Off Mirror Lake Headset Render

It is "practical to build now."

During a recent How to Pass the Visual Turing Test in AR/VR talk, Meta's Director of Display Systems Research Douglas Lanman showcased a render of its Mirror Lake headset, saying it's "practical to build now."

"Using Holocake, using multi-view eye tracking, using reverse passthrough, with hardware components that exist, we believe this headset which we call Mirror Lake, which is just a rendering here, is actually achievable."

The device was first teased last year and meant to show off "nearly all of the advanced visual technologies that we’ve been incubating over the past seven years" in a small case, as reported by UploadVR. It was merely a concept then, but now, this dream is a step closer to reality with this render.

If you think Meta's Mirror Lake is soon to be announced, you're wrong, though. Lanman said it's still something the company "could build with significant time," so chances are we're far away from a real implementation of Meta's ideas.

For now, we can only talk about what Mirror Lake is supposed to incorporate. The headset will boast Holocake lenses, Meta’s pancake optics with a "thin, flat holographic lens". You might have seen them in last year's prototype

Another feature to look forward to is the Reverse Passthrough, presented in 2021 as an experimental VR research demo that allows the eyes of someone wearing a headset to be seen by the outside world – we've seen it in Apple's AR headset.

Finally, there should be an electronic varifocal module which allows our eyes to focus on objects at different distances in VR/AR.
