Metal Gear Solid Remake Tries to Strike a Balance Between Being "Nostalgic" & "Not Feel Old"

Producer Noriaki Okamura shares the team's ultimate goal.

Konami

We are getting very close to the rumored release window of the highly-anticipated Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Konami's remake of the original 2004 action-adventure stealth game. While there isn't an official announcement about the release date yet, getting some more information from the team could be a great warm-up.

In Play magazine issue 46 (via Games Radar+), the game’s producer, Noriaki Okamura, delivered the goal of the team, specifying the feeling they hoped the game would bring to the players:

"Our whole goal when we’re making this remake is to make sure that it still feels like the game that you played 20 years ago, but without making it feel like an old game."

This could be a tricky task, though. Upon the announcement back in 2023, the team aimed to make the remake faithful to the original game, which was released two decades ago. To guarantee this authentic feeling, they even featured the original voice cast. Okamura further explains the factors the team considers regarding dos and don'ts.

"We didn't want to make any unnecessary changes that would take people out of that experience. But at the same time, we need to make sure that when people play the game, it doesn't feel old, like they're playing an old game. [We're] making sure that when you play this game, that it's still on par with some of the more modern games in terms of controls and without taking you out of the experience."

The controls he mentioned are one of the aspects that the team believes needs to be changed. The remake will offer a "new type" of control system which is "more in line with recent entries in the series" while keeping the old layouts for those who prefer the nostalgic way.

All in all, as Okamura summarized, "the best outcome for this is that [long-term fans] still feel nostalgic."

In other MGS-related news, we previously reported that the game will feature two difficulty modes and embrace some modern features despite the core design remaining untouched.
