Metaplay Ships a Unity-Based SDK to Help Mobile Developers Scale Their Games
The kit features a versatile toolset for game programming, backend engineering, and QA playtesting.
During the recently concluded Pocket Gamer Connects London event, Metaplay, a Helsinki-based software development company, officially announced the launch of its brand-new Unity-based software development kit (SDK), aiming to assist mobile developers in creating and scaling their games.
With almost five years of development behind it, the SDK introduces a robust and versatile set of tools for developers to build and expand their mobile projects, including both simple single-player titles created by solo developers and complex multiplayer games from large studios. According to the team, the kit was specifically designed to cover all aspects of production and scaling, offering development tools, a programmable C# server, a LiveOps Dashboard, and an efficient cloud infrastructure.
"Since 2019, we've mostly been working with a few hand-picked game studios in Helsinki to build a game-making platform that, once they've started using, they can't imagine their life without it," commented Metaplay's Chief Product Officer Teemu Haila (via VentureBeat). "We (and they) can confidently say the result is better than anything else out there. Now, we couldn't be more excited to introduce Metaplay to the world, and we can't wait for everyone to experience the incredible things you can do with it."
As part of the SDK, users gain access to a Unity package that allows them to write professional code more quickly and efficiently. Thanks to the toolkit, one can code a client and server simultaneously with shared C# game logic, develop most of the game offline for the fastest possible iterations, write server-authoritative and cheat-proof code that's production-ready from the start, and debug and test games using both local and online tools.
Furthermore, Metaplay provides a fully extensible and programmable C# server, enabling developers to easily add new features and modify existing ones, as well as deploy the source code into the cloud. The SDK also features a comprehensive LiveOps Dashboard, simplifying the management of A/B testing tools, event scheduling, offer management, advanced game config workflows, and other elements essential for driving engagement, retention, and monetization.
"We got tired of black-box backends holding us back when making games. So we made Metaplay, a full-stack platform with everything developers need to make a top-grossing game," added Petri Kero, CEO of Metaplay. "Our goal has always been to take Metaplay global and help developers far and wide achieve true scale without being limited in their creative vision, and now, the time has come to make that happen."
