Microsoft Has Reportedly Laid Off Nearly 1,000 Employees

The company reportedly laid off hundreds of employees across different teams as part of "structural adjustments." It is claimed that people affected include members of Xbox as well as Microsoft Strategic Missions and Technologies division.

Microsoft has reportedly laid off hundreds of employees across different teams – from the Xbox console gaming division to Microsoft Strategic Missions and Technology organization. It is claimed that less than 1,000 people have been affected.

That's according to Insider which cites a person familiar with the matter as well as a number of posts on social media published by people close to the company. For instance, KC Lemson, a Microsoft veteran who served as a product manager in the office of the Chief Technology Officer, took to Twitter today to say that she got laid off from the company this morning.

Insider also cited an internal email sent to Microsoft employees by Mission Engineering head Zach Kramer where he notified employees that the group would be "deprioritizing work already underway." While Kramer's email doesn't explicitly mention layoffs, it states that the company has to "make tradeoffs as resources are not unlimited and time is the scarcest of them all."

In July, Microsoft announced it would lay off less than 1% of its 180,000-person workforce and would significantly slow hiring in the face of an upcoming recession. It is unclear whether this week's layoffs are part of July's plans. However, one Microsoft employee who claimed they were laid off told Insider that they were hired only a month ago.

"Like all companies, we evaluate our business priorities on a regular basis, and make structural adjustments accordingly," a Microsoft spokesperson told Insider. "We will continue to invest in our business and hire in key growth areas in the year ahead."
