Phil Spencer wants Xbox to be more competitive in mobile gaming markets.
Just a mere year after Microsoft swallowed the big $69-billion cake of Blizzard and is still in the process of trying to digest and absorb the employees by letting go of at least 2500 of them, its eyes are already wide opening for more future acquisitions to fill its stomach.
In a recent talk, he shared with Bloomberg his plan to strengthen the company through more acquisitions and partnerships. “When we can find teams and technology and capability that add to what we’re trying to do in gaming at Microsoft, absolutely we will keep our heads up,” he said.

Specifically, the company is optimistic about the mobile gaming market, which it “definitely wants to be in.” When it acquired Blizzard last year, the company also gained ownership of the Candy Crush franchise, one of the most-played mobile games that generated $20 billion in lifetime revenue by September 2023. So, more mobile studios would surely help expand their portfolio.
Also, any deals that could bring “geographic diversity” might sound great for them, including in Asia. They probably will turn their sights to China as their recent cooperation with Chinese gaming giant Tencent on releasing the Age of Empires mobile version seems rewarding, making him believe that “the real opportunity is to partner with creative teams in China for global.”

If there is one thing good in this news, it could be that we probably won’t be shocked soon by news of another industry-shaking deal from Microsoft, though, as Spencer said nothing is “imminent” and big deals are “probably off the table at present.”
