The "Blue Screen of Death" in Windows is arguably the most iconic error screen in history, symbolizing frustration and lost work. It has remained largely unchanged since its debut in Windows 3.0, continuing through to modern versions like Windows 7 or 10.
However, some changes could be coming: Microsoft is testing a redesigned BSOD in a new Windows 11 preview release that started rolling out last week. It's intended to simplify the "stop error" (that's the official name) with more blank space and a smaller font due to "streamlined UI for unexpected restarts which better aligns with Windows 11 design principles".

This isn't the first time Microsoft has attempted to redesign the BSOD by switching it to a black screen in test builds from 2021. However, they reverted to the classic version, so users can expect it to remain blue, despite The Verge spotting a black version in test builds. For Windows Insiders, it currently appears as a "green screen" on Windows 11, version 24H2, and higher in the Beta, Dev, and Canary Channels, according to Microsoft.
