During yesterday's press conference that was held after a hearing at the European Commission, Microsoft president Brad Smith stated that PlayStation's share of the global market accounts for 70%, while Xbox's is only 30%.
According to him, in the case of individual regions, the difference in market share is even more pronounced. The share of PlayStation in Europe is 80%, compared to 20% for Microsoft, Smith claimed, while in Japan, Sony dominates with a market share of 96%, while Microsoft's share is only 4%.
"If you look at the global market, Sony has 70% of that market, and we have 30%. So the first thing a judge is going to have to decide is whether the FTC lawsuit is a case that will promote competition or is it really instead of case that will protect the largest competitor from competition."
Smith says these rates have remained stable over the past 20 years. As per his statement, despite the supply problems in 2022, Sony was able to get ahead of Microsoft in console sales.
Additionally, Microsoft's president noted that there are already 58 Xbox games available on the PlayStation, while only two games published by Sony can be played on the Xbox and added that Sony has 286 exclusive games versus Microsoft's 59 exclusives.
"So the administrative law judge is going to have to decide whether going from 59 to 60 is such a danger to competition that he should stop this from moving forward," Smith said.
During the same press conference, Smith announced that Microsoft has signed a deal with NVIDIA that will make Xbox PC titles available on the GeForce Now cloud gaming service. The titles will also include Call of Duty, if the deal is approved by regulators.
