The head of Microsoft's gaming division, Phil Spencer, decided to dive deeper into the situation and address frustration. The chief announced that all company employees will continue using the free subscription. He apologized for the misunderstanding.
"After looking into this more with the team, I just want to confirm that no change will be made to Game Pass availability in 2024," said Spencer. "If you have access to the Game Pass offer today you will continue to have access. I appreciate the time to get up to speed and sorry for the questions and confusion created. And thanks for supporting Xbox."
Microsoft employees have been receiving free access to Game Pass Ultimate since 2019 when the subscription was introduced. Before that, the company also provided them with Xbox Live Gold.
It is still unknown why Microsoft wanted to cut the free subscription. Previously, it was announced that within the restructuring of Xbox leadership, Sarah Bond will take on the role of President of Xbox and Matt Booty will assume the position of President of Game Content and Studios.
