The upcoming game, currently dubbed Adventureland, is set to be a spiritual successor to Minecraft.
2025 is less than a week in, yet the gaming industry has already seen some mind-boggling developments that few would have included in their list of New Year predictions. Among them is a statement from Markus "Notch" Persson, the creator of the legendary 3D sandbox game Minecraft, who recently took to Twitter to "basically announce" Minecraft 2.
Mojang
After a social media poll conducted by Notch revealed that over 80% of gamers were eager to see a Minecraft-style project from him, he announced that he would try to deliver on what he believes the audience expects of him, noting that he is "100% serious about all that." Describing the project as "basically Minecraft 2," Persson stated that he would love to work on a new game for what seems to be no reason other than to scratch the creative itch and would "absolutely be willing to give it an honest shot in the form of a spiritual successor to Minecraft."
"I don't super duper care exactly which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I do know I'm making one, so I figured I'd absolutely be willing to give it an honest shot in the form of a spiritual successor to Minecraft and put up a poll about it," commented the developer. "My intentions are to be clear and honest about it, saying that spiritual successors are usually kind of... you know... washed up. Tragic. The things I'm fearing my next game is going to be anyway and try to push myself to avoid. So why not do the thing that people DO want and are willing to give me, somehow, even MORE cash for?"
As for how this new project would connect with the original game, to which Notch sold his rights to Microsoft for $2.5 billion over a decade ago, the developer promised that the new project, currently dubbed Adventureland, would not "sneakily infringe on the incredible work the Mojang team is doing and that Microsoft is successfully doing the Microsoft shittification about." He also mentioned that the new game would most likely have an Early Access period to ensure players are getting exactly what they want.
As is the case with Persson's previous post-Minecraft endeavors, details regarding Minecraft 2 are few and far between. At the moment, it is unclear whether the sandbox's spiritual successor would be developed at Bitshift Entertainment, an enigmatic game studio launched by Notch last year, or by Persson himself as a solo project. It is also unknown how its production would affect Bitshift's upcoming old-school first-person roguelike, which, if the studio's official Twitter page is anything to go by, has not been canceled and is supposedly still in the works.
