In light of Nintendo's latest earnings report, Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of The Legend of Zelda, acknowledged that the company is confronted with a significant challenge to meet the expectations of fans worldwide with the upcoming film.
During a discussion with CEO Shuntaro Furukawa, both Miyamoto and Furukawa were questioned about the potential risks associated with expanding intellectual properties (IPs) beyond video games. Miyamoto specifically addressed the topic by referencing the recently announced Zelda live-action film during the earnings report.
"Regarding the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, I know we face an extremely high hurdle in producing a film that will not disappoint the global fan base. With this challenge in mind, I have been discussing this project with Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc., for about 10 years. Movies are just like games, in that you need to spend a lot of time working on them until you get to something you're satisfied with. Movies therefore need sponsors who can lend their full support until completion. For the production of our movies, Nintendo itself acts as a sponsor. To produce the movie, we were able to assemble a group of people who are willing to commit time to the production until we come up with something we feel confident about," shared Miyamoto.

Miyamoto emphasized that for The Super Mario Bros. movie, he and Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination, had complete creative control over every aspect of the production. Regarding the Zelda movie, Miyamoto mentioned that he and Avi Arad are taking ample time to ensure thorough preparation.
"We hope to release something good that will meet everyone's expectations, so please look forward to it," he added.
The forthcoming live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda will be produced by Miyamoto and Arad, with co-financing from Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment. The screenplay for the adaptation will be penned by Derek Connolly, known for his work on notable movies such as Jurassic World, Detective Pikachu, and Kong: Skull Island.
