Modern Warfare II Is On Track to Outsell Vanguard After Two Weeks of Its Release
The new Activision title was the best-selling game in the European markets in October, followed by FIFA 23, GTA V, and Gotham Knights.
According to the latest GSD data (via GamesIndustry.biz), 11.9 million video games were sold across Europe in October 2022, with game sales being up 1.5% over October 2021.
6.84 million games were sold digitally. Meanwhile, physical game sales dropped by 13% compared to last October. The decline in sales of boxed games is partially caused by a substantial increase in digital sales of new titles, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and FIFA 23.
Modern Warfare II topped the European charts in October. The first-week sales of the new Activision title outstripped last year's Vanguard by a whopping 125%. More than that, just two weeks after its release, Modern Warfare II is on-course to outperform the lifetime sales of Vanguard across the European markets.
FIFA 23, which sat at No.2 place in October, also shows great results – the game's sales were 4% higher than the first-month sales of the previous installment in the series, FIFA 22.
Third place in the European charts was taken by GTA V, which was followed by another new release, Gotham Knights. Another new entry in the charts was Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope which sat at No.5 place. The Nintendo Switch exclusive sold 17% more copies during the first two weeks of its release than its predecessor, 2017's Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, managed to sell over the same period.
As for hardware sales, 367,821 game consoles were sold across Europe in October. The figure represents a 33% decline compared to October 2021. It's worth noting that this data does not include sales in Germany and the UK.
The best-selling console of the month was PlayStation 5 which was followed by Nintendo Switch. Sales of Switch dropped compared to the same period in the previous year as in October 2021, the company released Switch OLED. Xbox Series X|S was the only console that saw an increase in sales in October 2022 – its sales grew by 26% compared to October 2021.
