Modern Warfare II Is the Best Call of Duty Opening Ever

The game generated $800 million within three days of its release becoming the best-selling game in the franchise's history in an opening weekend period.

Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was released just a few days ago, but it already managed to become a great success for the company. Just in the first three days after its release, the game generated $800 million in revenues, Activision confirmed.

We already knew that the game's physical sales far outstripped the sales that the previous installment in the series, Call of Duty: Vanguard, managed to achieve in the first week after its release. And now, Activision revealed that the title has also set a new record as "the #1 Call of Duty launch of all-time." The previous franchise record was set by 2011's Modern Warfare 3 which delivered $775 million in its first five days.

The publisher also touts that the game topped "any of the biggest worldwide box office openings of 2022" beating the combined openings of Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

It also shared that Modern Warfare II set new franchise records in the number of unique players as well as hours played during the first three days of "premium release", which likely refers to the game's early launch on October 20 for people who pre-ordered.

"Thank you, Call of Duty players, for making Modern Warfare II’s launch one for the record books as well as the highest grossing entertainment opening of the year," General Manager of Call of Duty Johanna Faries said. "It is our honor and privilege to deliver such a historic launch weekend for the best fans in the world."
