Monolith Soft, best known for the Xeno series, has shared a technical breakdown of how they use physics and mathematical theory to simulate objects in space, such as a wrench spinning (suspiciously resembling Gundam's Psycho-Frame).
The article also discusses implementation in Houdini, though it can be applied in other software such as Maya. Interestingly, very few of Monolith Soft's games actually take place in space, unless this possibly hints at Xenoblade 4. While there's no official news yet, the community speculates that the next main installment in the series could be a title for the Nintendo Switch 2.
