Morrowind Modder Added Object Physics Support To OpenMW

"Think Half-Life 1 level of physics, maybe a bit better."

There's something really special about the passion The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind fans have for this game, decades later, they're still finding ways to push it further. MaxYari has just released OpenMWLuaPhysics, a "pure-Lua" physics engine for OpenMW, which not only adds physics to every item in the game (things you can put in your inventory) but also provides a rich interface for developers.

You can pick up objects, toss them across the room, and even smash bottles. But be warned, messing with someone else's belongings won't go unnoticed forever. Whether you get caught depends on your sneak skill, how close you are to others, and sometimes just plain luck.

MaxYari noted that, at this stage, ranged attacks and spells won't affect objects, as OpenMW hasn't yet exposed an API to handle those interactions. Also, NPCs moving through stationary physics objects won't affect them.

This is a physics engine, so while it allows for playing around with items, the primary purpose of OpenMWLuaPhysics is to provide a set of methods that other developers can use to create physics-based mods.
