Yakuza creator Toshiro Nagoshi shared that the Nagoshi Studio's approach would be creating games based on human drama and revealed the early info on the studio's debut title.
Head of newly-formed Nagoshi Studio, Toshihiro Nagoshi, shared the studio's approach to making games and told about its debut title and its goals. In an interview with IGN Japan (translated by IGN), the former Yakuza director noted that the studio does not plan to lower its expectations, rather intending to replicate the global success of the Yakuza series.
Nagoshi explained that the studio is constantly inspired by films where human drama is essential and that's where the studio's focus is right now. “Just as before, I hope to create games in that vein that can reach a global audience. So you won’t find us making, like, smartphone puzzle games or whatever. Those games are fun, but what we’re good at and what the world expects from us is games with dramatic and moving stories, and that’s what we want to make,” shared Nagoshi.
Speaking of the new project, Nagoshi didn't go into the details on where the setting of the future game would be or whether his studio would cooperate with real actors, as it was with Yakuza and Judgment. He shared that the ideas for the new title are currently "slowly taking shape" and noted that the overall quality of the game and the emotional story that it would be based on was more important to the team than its setting.
“If the drama is good, then people in France will be moved by a Takeshi Kitano movie, and we in Japan can enjoy a movie from India. If the quality is good then anyone anywhere should be able to enjoy it. I want to return to that pure element of entertainment,” said Nagoshi.
Nagoshi's studio currently employs 10 people, but in the future, the game designer plans to expand the staff to 100 employees. However, the company will still "will have a compact number of staff", so all forces will go towards one project, and parallel production of several titles is not yet considered. Nagoshi didn't reveal when the new title will see the light of day, however, he noted that he doesn't want to delay its announcement, as it is important for him to hear the opinion of the community and make adjustments if necessary.
