Neil Druckmann: Naughty Dog Won't Be "The Last of Us Studio Forever"

The studio is working on "multiple single-player projects."

When examining the recent portfolio of Naughty Dog, a renowned video game company based in Santa Monica and owned by Sony, it's clear that the majority of recent projects have been from The Last of Us franchise, with the remainder from the Uncharted franchise.

The Last of Us series is critically acclaimed, having won numerous awards, including several "Game of the Year" recognitions. The series ranks among the best-selling games on PlayStation 3 and 4. As of January 2023, the franchise has sold over 37 million copies worldwide.

Its popularity led to expansion into various mediums. One highlight is the successful 2023 HBO TV series with a second season anticipated in 2025.

Rumors of The Last of Us Part III's production circulated in late 2022. Until now, there is no official announcement, despite that earlier this year Naughty Dog's boss, Neil Druckmann revealed he had finally had a concept for the long-speculated third game.

While we eagerly anticipate an official announcement regarding the third installment, Neil stated in a recent LA Times interview that Naughty Dog won't forever remain a "'The Last of Us' studio. "

"I promise you, we will not be ‘The Last of Us’ studio forever.' Numerous games, he said, are in the works, including “multiple single-player projects."

But regardless of what the future holds for Naughty Dog, one aspect will remain unchanged:

"We create experiences that are steeped in story and character, especially relationships," said Druckmann. "The stories have some sort of philosophical core that everything is going to revolve around and feed into."

While Naughty Dog appears to be shifting focus away from the franchise, it doesn't mean a complete departure. The possibility of a third installment in the series remains open. Do you think The Last of Us III is in production? Share your thoughts.
