NetEase Launches a New Canadian Studio, Bad Brain Game Studios

The team is currently working on a new IP that draws inspiration from iconic 1980s movies.

NetEase Games announced it has founded a new studio in Canada, named Bad Brain Game Studios. The company will have offices in Toronto and Montreal and will also incorporate a hybrid working model.

Under the leadership of Sean Crooks, a former Ubisoft producer known for his contributions to titles such as Just Dance, Driver, and the Watch Dogs franchise, the studio assembles a team comprised of developers who have previously worked on game series such as Splinter Cell, Army of Two, Far Cry, and Child of Light.

Bad Brain is hoping to build an "ambitious new franchise" and is currently working on the first game in the series – a story-driven open-world action-adventure game. This title will be heavily influenced by cult 1980s films and will be built using Unreal Engine 5.

Following the acquisition of SkyBox Labs in January, Bad Brain Game Studios becomes NetEase's second development studio in Canada. This expansion is part of NetEase's ongoing initiative to establish a series of internal studios in the West. Other recent additions to its roster of studios include AnchorPoint Studios, Spliced, Jar of Sparks, and the recently rebranded Jackalyptic Games (formerly known as Jackalope Games).
