Netflix To Acquire Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales Developer Next Games

The streaming service purchases the Finnish-based developer Next Games as a part of its strategy to add more mobile games to its entertainment subscription.

Netflix has announced its plans to purchase Next Games – the developer behind mobile games based on its show Stranger Things. According to the terms of the deal, the company acquires the Finnish-based studio for €65 million (about $72 million) or €2.10 per share.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2022 and will be a part of the streaming service’s strategy to increase its investment in mobile gaming adding more mobile games to its entertainment subscription.

Next Games specializes in developing games based on popular TV shows. Among its titles, there is The Walking Dead: Our World, and The Walking Dead: No Mans Land. It also released the Netflix franchise-based mobile game Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales.

"While we’re just getting started in games, I am confident that together with Next Games we will be able to build a portfolio of world-class games that will delight our members around the world."

Next Games CEO and co-founder Teemu Huuhtanen added: "Joining forces with the world’s largest streaming service, Netflix, presents an opportunity for a logical and exciting continuation of our strategy to craft interactive experiences for the world to enjoy. Our close collaboration with Netflix on Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales has already proven that together we create a strong partnership."

Next Games will be the second company Netflix purchased as a part of its expansion into interactive entertainment. In September, the company acquired Night School Studio – the developer behind Oxenfree and Afterparty.
