Netflix to Work on Sonic The Hedgehog Animated Series
Sonic the Hedgehog will get its own animated show on Netflix.
The streaming service announced Sonic Prime, a new animated series based on the legendary video game series celebrating the 30th anniversary in 2021. The new series is reported to launch worldwide on Netflix in 2022.
Netflix plans to develop a 24-episode animated show for kids 6-11 with the 30-year-old "blue blur" character living in "a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands." The team says it's "more than a race to save the universe, it’s a journey of self-discovery and redemption."
"Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone’s heart including my own," wrote Dominique Bazay, Director of Original Animation, Netflix. "I spent many hours with the blue blur as a kid and it’s a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix - one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy."
The show will be animated by WildBrain’s Vancouver studio. SEGA and WildBrain will team up to deal with production, distribution, and licensing.
