The Perfect Dark reboot, a reimagination of the Nintendo 64 stealth FPS, co-developed by The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics, didn't make it to the audience, as it was canceled twice: in July, due to Microsoft's mass layoffs in July 2025, and about a month later, after its developer failed to strike a new publishing deal. The reboot, centering around the original protagonist, agent Joanna Dark, aimed to add new gameplay mechanics and story elements to the initial narrative.
Recently, insightful details about the project surfaced online, offering a glimpse of the never-released work. According to MP1st, the concept information, which includes a sneak peek at the gameplay systems, key ideas, and concept art, dates back to the game's cancellation period and comes from an inside source – a former developer.
The Perfect Dark reboot was planned to focus on the Secret Agent genre and reimagine the original, keeping its "core DNA." The project was heavily inspired by the HBO series Westworld. As shared by the source, The Initiative was working on the reboot's Vertical Slice 1, developing a playable prototype that demonstrates the intended quality and overall experience of the final game. Also, the reboot was allegedly planned to be released in seasons, which would consecutively reveal its episodes.
The gameplay would include several conceptual systems, such as the Relentless System, the Reward System, and the Adrenaline System, treating adrenaline as a resource allowing a player to have healing powers, increase the power of damage inflicted to enemies, and increase tolerance to received damage.

The reboot's world would be crafted in the style referred to as "Eco Sci-Fi," combining the futuristic aesthetic with planet-friendly materials. The revealed materials include some concept images of the first season's environments.
