The console uses 20W less compared to the first model.
Sony has changed the internal design of its PlayStation 5's latest models, and now, the console is lighter and consumes less power, as YouTuber Austin Evans proved in one of his videos.
Evans compared three models of PS5 – the original 1000, 1100, and the latest 1200, which launched in Australia – and found out that the new version weighs 3.3 kilograms (about 7.3 pounds), it's 200 grams (0.45 pounds) less that the previous version and almost 500 grams (1.1 pounds) less than the first model.
Evans found out that the weight is connected to the smaller motherboard Sony put into the console. It visibly "misses" about two inches compared to the older models. The cooling is also slightly different due to an additional heat pipe and a smaller heatsink. Additionally, the CMOS battery is now hidden under the heatsink, so you'll have to disassemble PS5 to replace it.
The SSD enclosure is also a little different. It doesn't have a PCB across the entire length and instead has exposed metal.
While the weight loss is great, it probably won't affect players that much. What is impressive about the 1200 model is its power consumption. Apparently, it pulls about 20-30 watts less compared to the 1000 and 1100 respectively, which is an almost 10% reduction, although Evans hasn't found out why yet.
Interestingly, the new construction makes PS5 not only lighter but also probably cheaper, so Sony's decision to raise the console's price has also raised a few eyebrows.
