New Unity 6 Tech Cinematic Demo Released

Time Ghost highlights advancements in visual quality, project complexity, and the practical use of machine learning workflows.

During the Unite 2024 conference, Unity presented Time Ghost, a new cinematic demo showcasing the capabilities of Unity 6, the latest version of the game engine, including improvements in graphics, hair system, machine learning, and large-scale environments.

This four-minute demo runs in real-time on a PC equipped with an Intel Core i9-14900K CPU and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU. It leverages a range of Unity products, features, and services, including the Unity Sentis AI framework.

Aside from the custom ML model deployed with Sentis, allowing for high-quality cloth deformations in real-time, the demo leverages the latest improvements in HDRP, more sophisticated lighting options with APVs, Scenario Blending, and Smoke Lighting, performance gains with GPU Resident Drawer, and powerful artist tools like VFX Graph and Shader Graph, resulting in impressive visual quality and complexity.

Using DOTS ECS, the team created a large vibrant environment with up to 12 million vegetation instances, including trees and grasses. They scattered these assets with Houdini, exporting them as point clouds to Unity and converting them into DOTS ECS entities. This approach allows to handle the of vast amounts of vegetation, and through Impostor and LOD systems, it was possible to achieve high-performance rendering and real-time scene exploration.

The VFX collision system has been upgraded to be more stable, robust, and energy-conserving. It was used to enhance the behavior of debris falling onto the characters. The new collision events allowed for extra interactivity, with debris chunks breaking apart upon contact, contributing to a more chaotic and organic appearance.

Additionally, the hair system now enables high-density, real-time simulated hair. New features include seamless rendering LOD, automatic LOD generation, volumetric wind, and more – all of which enhance high-fidelity simulation in larger settings.

The assets from Time Ghost will be released on the Unity Asset Store on October 17, 2024, alongside Unity 6. These scenes will feature environments and a character utilizing cloth deformation.
