Their debut title is not "commercially successful enough" to support further development of the studio with its current size.
Inflexion Games
Inflexion Games, the studio founded by former BioWare veteran Aaryn Flynn, must make a hard decision to reduce the size of the team and lay off an unknown number of employees. As a result, its office in the UK will be shut down, and the headquarters in Edmonton, Canada, will undergo restructuring.
Although the concurrent players count reached 40,000 soon after the release, the fantasy PvE survival game Nightingale, their debut title, wasn't "commercially successful enough" to support further development at the studio, which is now owned by Tencent, with its current size. "Like many other studios over the past few years, we have been hit by the stark realities of the industry, and after exploring every possible option, we've had to make the difficult decision to let go of some of our remarkable and talented team members," reads the announcement post.
In this Dev Bites video below, Inflexion Games CEO, together with Art Director and Head of Audio Neil Thompson, provides some context about the decision and promises to do their best to keep the studio and Nightingale going despite the tough circumstances.
Last December, we had the honor of interviewing CEO Aaryn Flynn, who shared details about the team behind the game, the concept, the game mechanics, and why Unreal Engine 5 was chosen for it.
Nightingale was launched in Early Access in February this year, and you can find it here on Steam. It has received some positive reviews from players who enjoy its beautiful aesthetic, fun exploration, and unique twist to the traditional survival genre, despite some critics who believe the movements, UI, and performance can be further enhanced.
