Nintendo Abandoned Some Ideas for The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Due to Wii U Restrictions
The developers wanted to add flying but couldn't.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is just around the corner, promising a breath of fresh air for fans. Meanwhile, interesting details about the previous game in the series surfaced.
A recent interview with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild creators revealed that Nintendo had to abandon some ideas for the title due to Wii U (the other platform it was launched on, apart from Switch) limitations. For example, we could've had flying and underground adventures back then:
"We decided that it wouldn't involve flying," said the technical director Takuhiro Dohta. "Then [the producer] Aonuma-san kept saying, "If flying is out of the question, I want to dig underground!" And we'd respond, "Oh no! Please don't make us develop that too!"
So for Tears of the Kingdom, the developers decided to implement the ideas they couldn't include in the previous title. Dohta added that "developing in the same setting as the previous game was significant" as they wouldn't have been able to do so if they had made a completely new world.
This time, we will get both caves and verticality, which make the world more three-dimensional "under the premise that you'll be able to travel from the surface to the skies seamlessly."
Tears of the Kingdom is going to be released on May 12 for Nintendo Switch.
