The company now understands they were a bit early.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot mentioned that Nintendo advised the company to delay the release of Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and instead launch the sequel on the next Nintendo console. Guillemot thinks one of the reasons for the relatively low success of Sparks of Hope was that they decided to release two similar games on the same device.
"We had already released a Mario Rabbids game on Switch, so by doing another we had two similar experiences on one machine. On Nintendo, games like this never die. There are 25 Mario games on Switch. Nintendo has advised that it's better to do one iteration on each machine. We were a bit too early, we should have waited for the next console," said Guillemot.
Guillemot did not specify how long the company would have to wait for the next Nintendo console. Nintendo previously stated they are constantly working on new gaming hardware, but this doesn't mean the next console launch is just around the corner. In May, the head of Nintendo shared they do not plan to launch a next-generation device prematurely.
