With the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo Switch once again surpassed PS5 to take the top spot among game consoles in Europe in May.
Switch sales in Europe have increased by more than 39%. PS5 had to settle for No. 2, but it is still popular in Europe, with sales up 81% from May 2022. With sales down 16% from May 2016, Xbox Series S and X are in third place. Overall, 429,000 game consoles were sold across tracked European markets last year, that's a rise of 40% over the year before.
The popularity of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom may be used to explain this trend. The most current GSD figures show that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom had a highly successful month.
According to the most recent GSD statistics, close to 10.6 million physical and digital games were sold in Europe last month. Nearly all of the 33% rise in sales over the same period in May 2022 can be attributed to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the main hit of the month. After just three weeks on sale, Zelda is already the third best-selling game of the year across Europe, behind EA's FIFA 23 and Warner Bros' Hogwarts Legacy.
Hogwarts Legacy had a 321% increase in sales as a result of the game's release on the PS4 and Xbox One.
