As some of you may already be aware, when it comes to healthy relationships between game developers and their communities, Nintendo is often viewed as one of the strictest and the least fan-friendly studios in the world.
Throughout the years, Nintendo has become known for its draconian rules regarding the use of their IPs, stringent regulations on fan-driven activities, and, in some cases, even ruining people's lives for relatively minor offenses.
However, amongst all fan-made content, something that Nintendo seems to hate the most is unofficial ports of their old games, most often distributed for free with the somewhat noble purpose of paying tribute to the classic titles and preserving them from being forgotten.
The most recent example is Link's Awakening DX HD, a fan-created PC port of the Game Boy classic, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, which recently gained attention on social media. Unlike the official 2019 remaster, the fan-made version featured support for 120 FPS, removed loading screens between locations, and allowed players to zoom out for a full view of the entire island.
As is always the case, whenever such a port gains popularity, Nintendo's legal team swiftly intervenes, issuing cease and desist letters to the creators and threatening legal action against them. Such a fate has befallen Link's Awakening DX HD as well, with the project's Itch.io page now indicating that the game's files have been suspended due to a copyright claim.
"It has come to our attention that [Link's Awakening DX HD], offered on Itch.io, infringes and makes unauthorized use of Nintendo's copyrights in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening video game," reads the takedown notice issued by an authorized representative of Nintendo of America. "Please act expeditiously to remove the download and information page for the infringing game."
