Just another case of "you can't believe everything you read online."
Over the weekend, a rumor has spread online, fueled by news websites and regular users alike, suggesting that the "queen of video game adaptations" Ella Purnell, an actress who voiced Jinx in Riot's Arcane and played Lucy in Amazon's Fallout, would be playing Fallout: New Vegas to prepare for the second season of the Fallout TV series.
Based on a Bluesky post supposedly made by Purnell herself, the rumor suggested that playing the best Fallout game "may or may not" be beneficial for the actress in preparing for the upcoming sequel. The gossip gained more attention when another post claimed that the actress had purportedly chosen Quarry Junction, one of FNV's most challenging locations, filled to the brim with Deathclaws, as one of the first places she planned to visit.
"Cool, but why are you using screenshots instead of links to the original posts?" I can hear you asking. Well, as it turns out, the entire story is most likely fake, and the person behind "Ella Purnell's" Bluesky account is almost certainly an impersonator who simply decided to play the role of the actress, either for harmless fun or something more nefarious.
As noted in a Twitter Community Note about the rumor, the account in question was only created three days ago and has since done nothing but recycle Purnell's old photos from her other social media. Moreover, the Bluesky account doesn't have a verification badge and isn't mentioned on the actress' legitimate accounts, such as those on Instagram and Threads, further supporting the idea that she is not dodging Deathclaws as we speak.
Another clue that the story is likely a hoax is the very first post mentioned in this article, particularly the part about "a certain job" Purnell "may or may not be on soon." The attempt to make it sound as if it's not already confirmed that she will reprise her role as Lucy in Season 2 feels a bit forced and contrived, leaving you wondering why so many reputable news outlets reported on the rumor as if it were 100% true.
As it stands, while it's impossible to say with absolute, incontrovertible certainty whether the account is fake or not, all indicators suggest that no, Ella Purnell is not currently playing Fallout: New Vegas, and even if she is – which isn't outside the realm of possibility given the first season's ending – she's not the one behind the Bluesky announcements.
Speaking of Amazon's Fallout, it was recently reported that Macaulay Culkin, famous worldwide for his role as Kevin McCallister in Home Alone, will be joining the cast to portray a "crazy genius-type character." Given Culkin's appearance and the mention of New Vegas in the season finale, fans have speculated that he might play one of two already-existing characters from FNV, depending on whether the "crazy" or "genius" aspect is more prominent:
