Oblivion Remastered's 120GB File Size Revealed by a Leaker

The elusive remaster is alleged to be around 22 times larger than the original game.

Depending on where you live, your calendar may or may not already display the Monday of April 21st, meaning that, if previous rumors, leaks, and insider reports are to be believed, the highly anticipated – though still unconfirmed – remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion could arrive as early as today.

While Microsoft, Bethesda, and Virtuos continue larping as the Hero of Kvatch when invited to the Dark Brotherhood and [Say nothing.], the community keeps piecing together the probably-upcoming release, with the latest leak revealing the remaster's file size, and needless to say, it's a tad larger than the original game.

Long gone are the days when Oblivion had to leave factions, arenas in all cities, entire cities, and quest lines on the cutting room floor due to restricted file sizes. According to leaker Kran27 (via X0XLEAK's Twitter page), Oblivion Remastered is going to boast a file size of 120GB – around 22 times larger than the original's 5.52GB (Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles included).

On top of that, Kran27 claimed the remaster is indeed launching on April 21, adding weight to the idea that the earlier "accidental slip-up" by the Xbox Support team wasn't just an AI agent hallucinating a release date.

Besides Kran27's file size reveal, Oblivion's passionate community also uncovered what appears to be the SteamDB page for Oblivion Remastered over the weekend. According to a rumor, some users reported seeing the game appear in their Steam library. Plugging the app ID into the SteamDB URL leads to a mostly empty page, with the only notable detail being that the game first appeared on SteamDB on September 26, 2023.

Additionally, fans rediscovered a collection of Skyrim-style 3D potion models and shaders created by Mark Kirillov back in 2023 using Blender, ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter/Designer, Marmoset Toolbag, and Unreal Engine 5.

At the time, these stunning props were presented as a "personal project," however, given that Mark is the Lead 3D Technical Artist at Virtuos – the studio said to be developing Oblivion Remastered – many now suspect these eye-catching concoctions might actually be assets from the game itself.

We've reached out to Mark for clarification, though considering that neither Microsoft, Bethesda, nor Virtuos have acknowledged the existence of Oblivion Remastered despite various leaks, it's unlikely he'd be legally allowed to confirm anything either way.

As it stands, I'm still of the opinion that all the rumors and leaks are part of a clever plan by the developers to generate hype without spending a dime – essentially getting the fans to do the marketing for them – and whether that's true or not will likely be revealed sometime this week, maybe even today.
