It's a 3D texture painting app that can fit on two 1.44MB floppy disks.
ArmorPaint
We've been following ArmorPaint, the open-source and node-based 3D texture painting software and a potential alternative to Substance 3D Painter, for seven years now, and after all this time, version 1.0 is finally here and ready to download.
There's been a lot of work under the hood for the 1.0 release. ArmorPaint started out in Haxe and used V8, but it's now fully written in C with no external libraries. A lot of the software is custom-built, including its own 3D engine, 2D drawing system, and UI.
It now supports Direct3D 12, Vulkan, Metal, and WebGPU, with ray tracing available through Direct3D 12 on Windows, Vulkan on Linux and Android, and Metal on macOS and iOS. The codebase was also cleaned up and heavily reduced in size: Armory says that ArmorPaint 1.0 is now small enough to fit on two old-school 1.44MB floppy disks.
As for the features, you can find the full list in the changelog, but some notable additions include Decimate, Smooth, Bevel, and Subdivide modifiers for mesh editing, along with a basic UV map editor. There's now also a new Timeline tab, skinning animation playback, and support for tween animations.
ArmorPaint also added "Neural Nodes" for generative AI features, which, according to the developer, run locally on your device. You can learn more about ArmorPaint's features here and download it from the official site.
